Seoul and K-Pop Demon Hunters in the Eyes of an Architect

I came across a Youtube video that I’d like to share with you. It’s a review of K-Pop Demon Hunters by Professor Hyunjoon Yoo. He talks about the film from an architect’s perspective, pointing out interesting details about Seoul’s cityscape, and how the movie portrays it. I’ll go over a few of his points here, and if you’d like to dive deeper, I’ll leave a link for you to check out.

The Huntrix and the Saja Boys first confront each other in a narrow alley in Myeongdong. The northern part of Seoul, where Myeongdong sits, is an older part of the city filled with alleys like this. (I often recommend tourists to wander these lanes to feel the real atmosphere of Seoul.) At about four meters wide, these alleys were the perfect setting to stage a scene that felt like a fated encounter.

In the background of this scene, you can also spot numerous store signs. Some are written in Korean, others in English, just like in real life. Interestingly, when traveling abroad, people often find foreign signs charming, partly because they can’t read them and instead enjoy them as visual patterns. Koreans, on the other hand, often complain that domestic signs look cluttered and argue they should be more regulated. The movie captures this aspect well, the chaos of Seoul’s store signs.

Another confrontation takes place in Bukchon Hanok Village. In this scene, Rumi draws her sword towards Jinu, and the moment plays out on the rooftops of traditional hanok houses. This setting also highlights a key feature of Korean architecture.

Western architecture is wall-centered, so it’s rare to see action scenes staged on rooftops. In contrast, Korea and much of East Asia receive heavy rainfall, which made tall stone walls impractical because of ground subsidence. As a result, architecture developed with the roof as the defining element. This scene captures that difference effectively.

Bukchon itself sits on a hillside, and by presenting the action at roof level, the background naturally frames Seoul’s night skyline. The result is a sequence that merges traditional forms with the modern cityscape.

The next place where Rumi and Jinu meet is along the fortress wall in Naksan Park. Here again, a distinct feature of Korean architecture comes into view. At first glance, you might not even realize it is a fortress wall. It is surprisingly low, even shorter than a person’s height. This is very different from the towering stone walls common in Western architecture.

The reason lies again in Korea’s climate and geography. As mentioned earlier, Korea receives heavy rainfall, which made building massive stone walls risky. They would have been too heavy and could collapse when the ground weakened in the rain. Instead, Koreans relied on the terrain itself. 70 percent of the country is covered by mountains, resulting in slopes providing a natural defense. Even a low wall was enough to stop enemies climbing from below.

Back to modern elements, the Huntrix girls fight with demons on Cheongdam Bridge. This location is especially fitting because it is one of the sections where the subway comes above ground, which makes the action feel more dynamic.

It also brings in another defining feature of Seoul, the Han River. By setting the fight here, the film is able to showcase both the city’s modern infrastructure and the broader skyline that unfolds along the river.

배경에는 간판도 보여요. 한글 간판과 영어 간판이 섞여 있는 모습을 현실적으로 그렸어요. 흥미롭게도, 사람들은 간판을 잘 읽지 못하면 여행을 갔을 때 간판들을 멋스럽게 느낀다고 해요. 하지만 한국인들은 한국 간판들이 너무 어수선하다고 생각해요. 케이팝 데몬 헌터스는 서울의 혼잡한 간판과 매력을 함께 잘 잡아냈어요.

루미와 진우는 북촌 한옥마을에서 또 만나요. 여기서 루미가 진우를 칼로 베려는 장면이 있는데, 한옥 지붕 위에서 연출을 했어요. 이 장면도 한국 건축의 특징을 잘 보여줘요.

서양 건축은 벽 중심으로 지어서 이런 장면을 연출하기가 어려워요. 반면 한국을 비롯한 동아시아 지역은 비가 많이 와서 벽을 높이 쌓기 힘들었어요. 벽이 무거우면 비가 왔을 때 무너질 수 있어서요. 그래서 자연스럽게 지붕 중심으로 건축이 발달했어요. 이 장면은 이런 요소를 효과적으로 드러내요.

북촌이 이미 언덕 위에 자리잡은 데다 지붕 눈높이에서 장면을 만드니 서울의 야경까지 자연스럽게 배경으로 그려냈어요. 전통 건물과 현대 모습을 함께 담아낸 장면이에요.

루미와 진우는 낙산 성곽길에서 다시 만나요. 여기서도 한국 건축의 특징이 나타나요. 얼핏 보면 성곽인지 모르고 지나칠 만큼 성벽이 낮아요. 사람 키보다도 낮은데 서양 건축에서 볼 수 있는 높은 벽과 확연히 달라요.

이유는 또 한국의 기후와 지형에서 찾아요. 비가 많이 오면 무거운 성벽을 지탱하는 지반이 무너질 수 있죠. 대신 한국은 국토의 70 퍼센트가 산지라는 점을 활용해서 방어를 했어요. 성곽이 낮아도 경사 아래에서 올라오는 적을 막기에 충분했어요.

다시 현대 요소로 돌아올게요. 바로 청담대교에서 헌트릭스와 데몬들이 싸우죠. 이곳은 전철이 지상으로 나오는 구간이라 싸움 장면을 역동적으로 표현하기에 적합했어요.

이 장면은 서울을 대표하는 장소를 보여주기도 해요. 한강이죠. 여기서 싸움을 연출함으로써 현대 기반시설과 한강을 포함한 서울 전경을 보여줄 수 있었어요.
