배우다. It means to learn.
When broken down, the root is 배다, plus the causative 우. 배다 means to be pregnant or to seep in. So 배우다 literally carries the meaning “to make something grow inside you” or “to let it sink in.” (https://www.ajunews.com/view/20190617141855089)
Experts say this is the key to learning a language. Letting it to seep into your daily life, not treating it as a study. And that’s exactly what Tyler, an American who became a celebrity in Korea, has done. He speaks Korean so fluently he often surprises native speakers and has gained proficiency in several languages. Today, let’s look at the methods Tyler recommends for learning a language. (Links to resources at the end.)
1. Make the language come to you
Chasing a fixed study plan is difficult to sustain. If your goal is to complete lessons in a textbook or a app, it’s you who needs to go towards the tool. Instead, create an environment where the language keeps coming to you, where you can immerse yourself in the language.
There are immersion programs that use a Language Pledge. Once you’re inside the program you can only use the target language. This is known to accelerate progress. Make an environment similar at home.
Switch you phone’s language settings to Korean.
Have a Korean-only time period each day.
Join groups or communities where Korean is naturally spoken.
Fill your social feeds with Korean content, or make a separate account. (Adjust the algorithm by liking and subscribing to Korean creators.)
When Korean is everywhere around you, you don’t need to rely on willpower. Exposure becomes automatic.
2. Let meaning sink in
Real learning happens through discovery, not brute forcing memorization. Realizing yourself after struggling makes the language truly yours.
Watch without subtitles first and guess the meaning.
When reading, make a guess at unknown words, then circle back to check if you were right.
Keep you own personal word list of things you notice, not what a textbook hands you.
The discomfort along with guessing, followed by noticing and realizing is what makes the language stick.
3. Use it until it’s yours
This can be difficult if you aren’t living in Korea. However, there are still ways to apply what you have learned.
Talk to yourself in Korean.
Try chats with AI in voice mode or look for language partners.
Teach what you’ve learned to a friend. (Even if they are not interested in Korean.)

2. 의미를 깨달으세요
언어는 암기가 아니라 발견할 때 습득을 해요. 괴로워하다가 직접 깨달으면 진짜 내 것으로 만들 수 있어요.
자막 없이 먼저 보고 의미를 유추하세요.
독서를 하다가 모르는 단어가 나왔을 땐 의미를 유추해 본 뒤에 나중에 맞았는지 틀렸는지 확인하세요.
교재 단어집 말고 직접 깨달은 단어 목록을 만드세요.
불편함과 유추, 그리고 깨닫는 과정에서 언어를 습득하세요.
3. 사용하세요
한국에 살지 않는다면 한국어를 사용하기 힘들 수도 있어요. 그래도 배운 내용을 사용할 수 있는 방법이 있어요.
한국어로 혼잣말을 하세요.
AI를 활용해서 말을 하거나 같이 한국말을 할 짝을 찾으세요.
배운 내용을 친구에게 가르쳐 보세요. (친구가 한국어에 관심이 없어도 괜찮아요.)
