Depending on your where you live, your language may have many expressions related to god. “Oh my god” and “Thank god” would be some examples. In Korean, phrases with god are rare in everyday talk. There may be many reasons like historical backgrounds, but one hint why shows up in the numbers. The most common religion in Korea is actually ‘no religion.’ About 51% of the population say they have no religion. Protestant follows by 20%, Buddhist 17%, Catholic 11%, and others 2%.

세대를 나눠서 보면 더 흥미로워요. 18~29세 중 69%가 종교가 없어요. 반면 60대는 38%, 70대 이상은 30%만 종교가 없다고 답변했어요. 이유는 뭘까요? 설문에 따르면 ‘무관심’과 ‘낮은 신뢰도’ 그리고 ‘학업 및 업무로 인한 시간 부족’ 등이 젊은층이 종교를 믿지 않는 이유였어요.

Fun fact: Luckily, even though more than half of the population doesn’t have a religion, both Christmas and Buddha’s Birthday are public holidays.
